About Islamic Calendars
Preserving Tradition, Strengthening Communities
At Islamic Calendars, our mission is to make the Islamic Hijri Calendar both accessible and meaningful for Muslims worldwide. Rooted in the principles of our faith, our calendars are designed to not only mark time but to deepen our connection to Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) and our communities.
Guided by Divine Revelation
Our approach is firmly grounded in the teachings of the Qur'an and the Sunnah. Allah (عَزَّ وَجَلَّ) says:
"He is the One Who made the sun a radiant source and the moon a reflected light, with precisely ordained phases, so that you may know the number of years and calculation ˹of time˺."
Furthermore, the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) instructed:
"Observe fast on sighting it (the new moon) and break it on sighting it. But if the sky is cloudy for you, then complete the number (of thirty)."
These sacred texts emphasize the significance of moon sighting in our worship and daily lives.
Rooted in Islamic Principles: What Makes Islamic Calendars Unique?
We address common challenges faced by many Muslims in observing the lunar calendar:
-
Regional Moon Sighting Accuracy – Our calendars are based on actual local moon sightings, ensuring authenticity and unity within the community. This practice aligns with the Prophet's (ﷺ) guidance to observe fasting and breaking fast upon sighting the moon. (Sahih Muslim: 1081a)
-
New Hilal = New Month – Each new crescent moon signifies the start of a new month, fostering spiritual mindfulness and adherence to the Sunnah. The Qur'an mentions that the moon's phases are a means to measure time:
"يَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلْأَهِلَّةِ ۖ قُلْ هِىَ مَوَٰقِيتُ لِلنَّاسِ وَٱلْحَجِّ"
"They ask you about the new moons. Say, 'They are measurements of time for the people and for Hajj.'"
-
Respectful Design – Our calendars are free from sacred texts and images of living beings, allowing for respectful year-end disposal and ensuring they do not prevent angels from entering your home. This consideration is based on the hadith:
"The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or picture of a living creature (a human being or an animal)."
-
Community Unity – By aligning with local mosque practices, our calendars promote communal harmony, enabling families and congregations to observe significant dates together. The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized unity in fasting:
"The fast is the day when you all fast, the breaking of fast is on the day when you all break fast, and the sacrifice is on the day when you all offer sacrifice."
-
Educational and Inspirational – Each month provides insights into the significance of Islamic dates and the lunar cycle, enhancing your understanding and connection to our rich heritage.
-
Elegant Design – Incorporating Islamic art, calligraphy, and lunar imagery, our calendars are both functional and aesthetically pleasing, enriching your home environment.
